Being green, one slab at a time (Mudgee Guardian)

The way in which those foundations were laid is seen as a first for Mudgee.

The Wilson’s, in conjunction with Lynch Building Group, are using an alternative to the conventional and often wasteful ways of laying down a concrete slab.

Known as Cupolex, the structural dome concrete slab system differs from Rib Raft, Waffle Pod and other Polystyrene concrete void systems.

The dome components used to create a concrete slab are manufactured from 100 per cent recycled plastic. The domes interlock in a pod configuration and can be fully ventilated.

Mr Wilson said advantages of using Cupolex included reduced power usage because temperatures would be kept cooler. The system also acts as a prevention against rising damp.

“Cupolex provides an absolute barrier with no capillary action possible,” he said.

The system was originally developed for the US Air Force as a solution to ventilate Radon Gas from new buildings.

Managing director of Australian Urethane and Styrene, Geoff Benson, said the system was perfect for regional areas like Mudgee.

“The savings on transport and concrete costs alone make it [Cupolex] a viable alternative,” he said.

“There is zero waste compared to waffle pods which can end up with 2-3 cubic metres of waste. That becomes very expensive to dispose.

“The domes also make this system safe in terms of OH&S capacity. There some places in Australia where working with waffle pods is banned now.

“Also less concrete has to be poured which is great for the customer.”

Polystyrene Foam - construction

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a thermoplastic material, derived from pre-expanded polystyrene beads, that combines an extreme lightweight with versatile strength and thermal insulation. These characteristics made EPS an excellent alternative to natural materials for the feasibility of building and construction projects that would otherwise destined, for time and implementation costs, to be postponed or alienated. Specifically, this technology has been successfully used in road infrastructure sector in the last twenty years in the construction of roads, bridge abutments, lightweight embankments and backfills, above all for the rapid restoration of compromised roads following landslide or calamitous events, representing an interesting and resilient solution in areas exposed to seismic risk or persistent vibratory actions.

Eco-Environmental Foams

This study assesses the viability of recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) as an eco-friendly alternative for partially replacing sand in rendering mortars. Three mortars formulations were tested: one using 100% natural sand as a reference, and two with 30% volumetric substitution of natural sand by EPS (either virgin or recycled particles) in the total mortar volume. Two distinct mixing methods were employed for mortars incorporating EPS particles. The rheological behavior was assessed using a squeeze-flow test, and after 28 days, mechanical properties were evaluated, including compressive and flexural strength, and dynamic elastic modulusMicrostructural analysis via SEM-EDS and capillary water absorption tests were performed, along with an investigation into adhesive strength between concrete substrate and mortar. Mortars with EPS particles exhibited improved fluidity, with an initial mixing step enhancing particle homogenization. Notably, recycled EPS flakes outperformed virgin EPS beads in mechanical properties, particularly with mixing method B. Moreover, water absorption rates varied, and adhesive strength remained comparable to the reference mortar.

Ausblox Geofoam

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) or “Geofoam” is gaining popularity as a widely acceptable and cost efficient construction insulation material. It is commonly used for structural fill material, elevated slab applications, road construction and much more. Geofoam is extremely light weight and can withstand harsh conditions. Since Geofoam (Expanded Polystyrene) was introduced in the 1950s, it has been used in thousands upon thousands of various construction projects worldwide. EPS Geofoam has proven to be the material of choice to use in landfills, stabilizing slopes, bridge embankments, etc.

EPS Geofoam is different from the commonly known “Styrofoam” in several ways. While EPS Geofoam will mimic the physical characteristics of Extruded Polystyrene, or Styrofoam, one of the biggest differences between the two foam construction materials is the way EPS Geofoam is manufactured vs that of its “cousin”, XPS or Styrofoam.
